General Information:
Guilin is known as China's most picturesque city. It is located in the
northeastern part of the Autonomous Region of Guangxi province. Several
crystal-clear rivers meander through the town, which is encircled by mountains
with bizarre rock formations and caves. This landscape was formed over a period
of some 200 million years, when the sea still reached this far inland. Layers of
muschelkalk (chalk formed from fossilized shells) were deposited; then the
earth's crust was formed; and, finally, the chalk stratified and was shaped by
wind and water to produce vast numbers of caves. All this makes Guilin a unique
natural experience. For hundreds of years, poets and painters have been
fascinated by the sheer splendor of the scenery, about which many fairy tales
and legends have been woven.

History:
Founded during the Qin Dynasty over 2,000 years ago, prospered in
Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD)
and
Sung Dynasty (960-1279 AD), flourished in
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) and Qing; used to be the Provincial capital of
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Travel:
By Air: At present, Guilin Airport accommodates over 50 airlines,
many of which provide direct flights to several cities within China, such as
Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Xi'an, Kunming, and Chengdu. By Rail:
All major cities in China can be reached by train from Guilin. The new passenger
railway station now under construction will be equipped with a lobby large
enough to hold 15,000 people. By Road: Guilin is accessible by highway from all directions. Plans are
underway to construct a superhighway from Guilin to Wuzhou. After completion of
this superhighway, the distance between Guilin and the Zhujiang River Delta,
Hong Kong, and Macao will be shortened significantly.

Cuisine:
Guilin is famous for its exotic dishes and the sight of dogs, birds,
turtles, snakes and other weird and wonderful animals in their cages is not
unusual here! Don't be afraid though, if you are not feeling especially brave,
there are plenty of tasty options for those who prefer their food to be dead
before it arrives at the table!. Guilin cuisine is also typified by its
sweetness and delicate use of spice and chili. Bamboo leaves stuffed with sweet
rice are a great Guilin snack available all over the city and also in some of
the restaurants. The city also has some fine up-market restaurants where you can
sample typical local dishes. The Guilin Hotel Restaurant has a nice environment
to sample some of this food and the Chicken Balls with chestnut are especially
good here.

Full Day Tour |
No other scenery in China is so unique, so indescribably beautiful yet
mysterious, nor calls forth such breathless admiration as the karst region
around Guilin. By 08:30, please be ready in the hotel lobby and our guide will
take you directly to the ferry. Starting at Guilin, the boat first passes
Elephant Trunk Hill and Pierced Hill where the hole in the hill glistens like a
moon in the reflection of the evening sun. Then comes Pagoda Hill and Fighting
Cocks Hill. Lunch is served on the cruise around 11:30. It takes
approximately six hours to reach
Yangshuo, a small town which the hoards of
tourists and visitors have turned into a giant bazaar. If you do have the
interest, a cup of coffee would be recommended on the so-called Foreigner's
Street, where some of the small cafe offer the first class coffee as in deluxe
hotels plus the most exotic atmosphere available nowhere else. On the return bus
journey one more stop will also be made at the giant banyan tree reputed to be
1,300 years old.
