Red Forest Nature Reserve
The Red Forest Nature Reserve (Hong Shu Lin) is an unusual and intriguing evergreen forest peculiar to the subtropical coastal area of Hainan. Despite the name, the trees here do not actually have red leaves. The bizarre thing about this coastal forest is that when the tide is in, the roots of the trees are surrounded by water, giving the appearance that the trees grow directly from beneath the sea. This aquatic environment is ideal for breeding fish and shrimp and the leaves on the trees here are also said to have medicinal value. This particular type of tree produces seeds which sprout and propagate within their own shell. Once they have dropped from the tree to the ground, they grow into flowers within one or two hours. If the seed falls into the sea however, it does not take root but remains alive for up to three months until it finds land to harvest on. Tide times vary according to season, but when the tide is in there are some really fun boat trips to be enjoyed, winding in and out of the tree trunks and then on to the tiny island nearby, ripe with pineapple trees. Address: Yanfeng Town, Qiongshan City. How to get there: Take a minibus from Wugong Temple to Fusheng in Qiongshan city (¥4), a pedicab will take you to the forest park from here. (¥2). Boat information: The boat leaves from the entrance of the park when the tide is in. Each trip takes approximately one hour and prices start from ¥10 per person for a round trip to the small island. Opening Hours: 8:00-18:00.

Hairui Tomb:

The Tomb of Hairui can be found in the west of the Haikou town. Hairui (1514 - 1587) was a compassionate and popular officer who lived during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). He is famous for his righteousness and royalty. Later he was being persecuted and was out of the emperor's favor and was exiled to Hainan Island. After his death, those people who admire his good works build a tomb for him. It was said that during Hairui's funeral possession, while his coffin is been carried and was passing the village, the rope suddenly broke, it was claimed that it was Hairui own chosen burial ground. So the people decided to build Harui's tomb on the particular spot. His story caused uproar in the 1960s after the publication of a play entitled "The Dismissal of Hai Rui" by the Chinese historian Wu Han. The play is an ironic look at the treatment of Peng Dehui, a Marshall, following his criticisms of Chairman Mao Zedong. The play was brutally suppressed upon publication and Wu Han arrested. These events are popularly cited as contributing to the start of the Cultural Revolution. At the entrance to the tomb is a stone archway with scarlet inscriptions says "Yuedong ZhengQi". Leading to the tomb is a 100 m paved walkways, lines with finely carved stone statues (it is normal that most mausoleums in China have such a sacred way to honor a person). The tomb is a semi globe shape brick structure resting on a hexagonal marble pedestal. It covers an area of 7.4 acre. A stone tablet with Hairui's title inscripted on it was erected on the tomb. Ancient trees such as coconut trees, casuarinas, and cypresses are planted around the area and a museum nearby exhibits the biography of Hairui's life and some materials concerning him. During the Cultural Revolution, the tomb was nearly torn down but now has been tastefully restored to its former glory. Address: Shugang Dadao. How to get there: Take Bus #2 from Longhua Lu to Haixiu Dadao and walk south to Shugang Dadao. Opening hours: Daily 09:00 - 16:00. Admission: ¥2
