Chongshan
Monastery
Chongshan Temple (Chongshan si, Temple for Appreciating Kindliness) was
originally built in the last years of the
Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD). When first built, the complex was a sojourning palace for the then emperor
when he visited the area. It was not until the year 1381 AD that the complex
became a monastery, after a large scale expansion in commemoration of the
recently deceased
Ming Dynasty's (1368-1644 AD) first empress. Unfortunately a fire in
1864 brought almost all of the buildings down in ashes. Today, the remains of
the once large complex include the main gate, a bell tower, the main hall (Dabei
dian) and two side rooms, all of which take on a typical Ming Dynasty
architectural look. On approach visitors to the temple are confronted by a pair
of iron sentry lions that squat solemnly in front of the gate. The best of the
halls here is the main hall, that houses three Buddhas. The largest of these,
the central Buddha, is a statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, who has a
representational 1,000 hands and eyes and who stands at 8.5 m tall. The
monastery also boasts a rare collection of sutras written in the Song (960-1279
AD),
Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD),
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) and
Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD). How to get there: The temple lies just to the back of the Provincial Museum. Opening hours: 08:00 - 17:00. Cost: ¥6.

Twin Pagoda Temple
The
Twin Pagoda Temple (Shuangta si), also known as Yongzuo Temple (Yongzuo si), was
originally constructed in 1608 during the
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). The
temple was ordered to be built by the emperor, who charged a loyal subject, the
monk Fu Deng, to build it. Whereas usually the raising of funds would be
approached either through entreaties to the emperor or through a number of
public channels, the wily monk was able to have the Twin Pagodas almost solely
funded by one affluent local businessman. The complex, standing on the
slope of a mountain, is designed so that each of its buildings fit well with the
ascending landscape. The 50 m high, 13-storey, twin octagonal pagodas are
the highlight of the temple, and on arrival at either of their tops visitors can
get some great views over the city. Most of the other buildings in the temple
are made with gray bricks, that have proved useful in saving them from the
destructive fires that have destroyed many of this type of temple in the past.
Of these gray buildings, the most worthy of a look in is one on the eastern side
of the temple, that contains a rare collection of steles bearing the works of
famed calligraphers from various dynasties. The best time to visit the
temple is during April for this is the blooming season for the peony trees that
have sat here since the Ming Dynasty. How to get there: From the city
center, take Bus #21. Opening hours: 08:00-17:00. Cost: ¥6.

not spectacular but this large, green and clean space is a refreshing and
welcome change from the rest of this concrete city. The gardens cover about 590
hectares and are located in the northeast of the city on Xianhu Road with the
majestic Wutong Mountain behind. The gardens are designed according to
traditional principles of Chinese garden design and there are more than 3,000
different types of plant here. The gardens also contain a plant research
institute. There are a few nice pavilions scattered about that provide shelter
from the sun. Address: 160, Xianhu Road, Liantang.

Nan'ao Bay
The seafood from Nan'ao Bay is exceptionally fresh and tasty and this is a great
area to sample some more unusual sea creatures! The sea here is teeming with
rare sea animals including abalone and sea urchin. This is also a pleasant
district to wander and explore. The atmosphere is lively and vibrant as the fish
arrives in huge nets from ships and is thrown onto the docks and most of the
residents here survive on the income they make from the sea. The beach here is
pleasant too and the bay looks over to Hong Kong only 1,000 m across the
water. How to get there: Take Bus #360 from the city center.
