VISAS

Visas for China:  Travelers wishing to travel to China should apply to a local Chinese embassy or consulate for tourist visa (L). In the event of a group tour of more than nine persons, the organizer has to apply for group tourist visas> (L). Travelers requesting to visit Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Xiamen Special Economic Zones may apply directly to visa authorities in these zones for tourist visas to special economic zones. Foreign tourist groups from Hong Kong for a 72-hour visit to the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone are exempt from entry visas. When applying for a visa, travelers are required to answer certain questions and go through the following formalities: Providing a valid passport or any document in place of a passport (2) Filling in a visa application form and handing in up-to-date passport photos; (3) Submitting documents needed for visa application and documents which explain one's reason(s) to enter China.

 

A traveler staying in China with a tourist visa (L) is not allowed to engage in activities beyond the capacity as a tourist, such as employment, religious propaganda and illegal journalist interviewing. Violators of this stipulation will be punished. The Chinese Government protects the lawful rights of travelers in China. On their part, travelers staying in China should abide by the Chinese laws and respect the Chinese habits and customs, and on no account should they do anything to jeopardize China's national security, public interests and social order. 

 

Visas for Hong Kong:  A Passport is required to visit Hong Kong. Losing your passport here is a particular hassle, as obtaining a new one involves a long bureaucratic process. UK passport holders can stay in Hong Kong for up to six months without a visa. Citizens of Commonwealth countries do not require a visa for up to three months. American citizens, Japanese, South African and Germans can stay for one month without a visa. Visitors to Hong Kong are supposed to show that they have adequate funds for their stay and an onward ticket. The British Consulate is at 1 Supreme Court Road, Admiralty. The American Consulate is at 26 Garden Road, Central.

 

Visas for Macau Visas are not required for those holding passports from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Britain, USA, South Korea, Singapore, Luxembourg, Ireland, Brazil, South Africa, India, Mexico and Germany. Visitors from these nations may stay for up to 20 days. Hong Kong residents with 3-star ID cards may stay for up to 90 days. Taiwan residents do not require a visa but do however, require a valid passport and entry permission for Hong Kong. Taiwan residents are permitted to stay in Macau for up to 20 days.

 

Visas for the Republic of Mongolia: Visas for the Republic of Mongolia can be obtained from both Beijing and Hohhot.

 

Visas for Tibet:  Although the government encourages group tours, tourists do need a Tibetan entry permit, issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, in addition to a Chinese visa.
